The Centre for Health Equity Training Research and Evaluation (CHETRE) was established in 1998 in collaboration with the then Division of Population Health, Sydney South West Area Health Service through a Research and Development Infrastructure Grant from NSW Health.

CHETRE’s work focuses on the description and measurement of health inequalities and health equity, development and evaluation of policies, programs and other actions that aim to achieve health equity, and developing the capacity of the health system to more effectively address health equity through policy and program development.

In 2005 CHETRE became part of the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Australia (The University of New South Wales). CHETRE is also a Unit of Population Health, South Western Sydney Local Health District, NSW Health and an affiliate of the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.

The Early Childhood Connect website has been developed to inform professionals, policymakers and other interested parties about research being conducted in early childhood by CHETRE. CHETRE's work in early childhood focuses on assessing interventions to redress early childhood disadvantage.
